What we needed, but didn't know

The Times showed its softer side this morning: a new bird made the front page.

The Liocichla Bugunorum was discovered in Arunachal Pradesh by amateur ornithologist Ramana Athreya who, "collected feathers and photographs and recorded the bird's songs" but let the birds themselves go free.

Another gentle angle to an already lovely story. Mr. Athreya is an amateur ornithologist, but he is a full-time astronomer.

So - in the great order of things: we lost Pluto in our scheme of the heavens some weeks back, but have gained a bird.

Someone, somewhere, is evening the score.

Not such a bad day in that regard.
